GR Christian Middle School (5-8)

Student Activities

GeoBee: The National Geographic Society organizes an annual Geography Bee. All GRCMS students are invited to participate by signing up between now and Nov 6. The first round of the competition, held on November 13, is a written test including questions about U.S. Geography, U.S. Cities, Continents, World’s Largest Cities, and Cultural Geography. The students with the top scores on the written test will advance to the next round. Round 2 is an oral test held on December 11. The winner of round 2 will take a written test in January to enter the state competition. Finalists from this written test compete in April to advance to the national competition in Washington D.C.

Science Olympiad: Students at Grand Rapids Christian Middle School are pumping up their knowledge about a variety of Science topics to compete in the annual SO event at Grand Valley State University in March. There will be twenty-three teams working weekly on topics they’ve chosen. Some will be building things such as cars, planes, catapults, and bridges and others will bone up on topics such as meteorology, electricity, biology and physical science.

The team spirit will be enhanced by cooperating with parent and high school student coaches. There will be a pizza party to hand out information regarding practice times and event details. Students and parents are invited to the high school for that on October 14th.

Watch for details on practice times starting December 3rd.

Spelling Bee: Every year our students are invited to participate in the school spelling bee. This year the sign up deadline to participate is November 20. When students sign up they will receive a book with words to practice for the bee. Our school competition takes place in January and is an oral competition which follows the process used in the Scripps national Spelling Bee. The first and second place spellers will advance to the Greater Grand Rapids Spelling Bee, held in February.

Wordmasters: Wordmasters is a vocabulary challenge. Students are given a list of 25 words to learn 3 times a year. These words are used in 3 separate analogy quizzes through the year. Each grade may submit a team score, which is the sum of the top 10 student scores. Our grades then receive feedback on how we did in comparison to other participating schools. Students who receive perfect scores are recognized at the end of the year.
