Rockford Christian offers a Christ-centered education. Our mission is to equip students to be servants of Christ in contemporary society and to assist each child in discovering what it means to accept God's call to serve in His kingdom.

"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." Proverbs 22:6

Kindergarten Options for Fall 2008

We offer both a three full-day program and a five half-day morning program for our families who will have students in kindergarten.

We also offer "Kids Club" - a child care and enrichment program during the afternoon. This program is available for pre-schoolers and kindergarteners. Please contact the school office at 616-574-6400 for more information or email jvanderwerp@grcs.org

Your child must be five by December 1 to enter kindergarten in the fall.

Philosophy

Rockford Christian's kindergarten is developmental. Teachers recognize that each child has been created by God as a unique person. While children learn in predictable patterns of development, each child is unique in his or her pattern and timing of development. Teachers value each child's developmental level and try to design a classroom and curriculum which meets the needs of each child.

Curriculum Overview

BIBLE
We use the curriculum from Christian Schools International. Through stories, songs, and memory work the children are taught that

  • God loves them and cares for them,
  • We are part of a caring Christian community and we must care for each other the way that God cares for us, and
  • God answers prayers.

LANGUAGE ARTS
We use the program Zoo-phonics. Through games and other phonics materials, this program connects reading, spelling, literature, and student writing. The alphabet is taught using a cast of animal characters and sounds and a body movement that directly relates to the animal/letter.

MATHEMATICS
Through the Everyday Mathematics curriculum, students are exposed to many different skills using a variety of manipulatives. Skills covered include

  • numeration and counting,
  • measurement and time,
  • patterning,
  • money,
  • graphing,
  • addition and subtraction.

SCIENCE
Combining curriculum from Christian Schools International and AIMS, kindergartners spend time discovering God's creation by learning about

  • our five senses,
  • weather,
  • plants,
  • animals,
  • land and water,
  • night and day,
  • things that sink and float,
  • heat, light, and sound.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Our curriculum starts with a focus on the child and then incorporates the world around them. Units studied include

  • all about me,
  • family/grandparents,
  • friends/school community,
  • holidays,
  • community helpers and safety,
  • maps/transportation.
