CAMPUS: Rockford Christian School

ROLE: Executive Secretary

Where did you begin your career in education?

I began at Millbrook Christian School as the secretary, working for Peter Buma, from 1983-1988.

How many years have you been working in Christian education, and how long have you been working at Grand Rapids Christian?

I have been at Rockford Christian since it started in the fall of 1997 (29 years) in the basement of the dining hall at Camp Roger. What an incredible journey it has been!

Do you have a favorite year that you worked or a favorite memory? What made this stand out in your mind?

In 2001-2002 when the current Rockford Christian building on Belding Road was built, staff and parents packed up the school over Christmas break and moved everything to 6060 Belding Road. We began 2002 in the new building. The new building was (and still is) beautiful. So much space — we could fit the entire previous building we had occupied in just the gym! It was and continues to be a wonderful blessing to families in the Rockford area.

Tell about a moment in your career that you will never forget, possibly at an event or with a student or co-worker.

I was stopped in the hallway last fall by a kindergarten student and asked, "So what exactly is it that you do around here? Do you just walk around all the time?" I answered, "Well, yes, sometimes it feels that way." (If they only knew!)

Tell about your most significant learning experience either from a colleague, student, parent, or Professional Development Day.

I have enjoyed our Secretary PLT meetings. It is wonderful to share and laugh together and also to learn from one another.

What are you looking forward to, or what is your next adventure?

Traveling and spending time with our grandchildren.

Any other advice, memories, or stories you would like to share?

RCS is a family and a community where we love and care for each other — a special place. I hope and pray that God continues to bless the good work that is being done here.
