Physical Education Teacher at GRCES - Iroquois Campus

Where did you begin your career in education?
West Side Christian School

How many years have you been working in Christian education, and how long have you been working at Grand Rapids Christian?
I am concluding my 39th year - 38 of them at GRCS.

What schools/buildings have you worked at either before coming to GRCS or while at GRCS?
Started in 1983 at West Side Christian School, and was hired in 1984 at Creston Christian School and then through the years teaching at Seymour Christian, Evergreen Christian, Millbrook Christian, Sylvan Christian, Oakdale Christian, Grand Rapids Christian Middle School and finally Grand Rapids Christian Elementary School, Iroquois Campus. Also  a few coaching stints at Calvin Christian High School, Jenison Christian and Grand Rapids Christian Middle School.

Do you have a favorite year that you worked or a favorite memory? What made this stand out in your mind?
The goal of an elementary PE teacher is to instill in students the love of movement. One kindergarten student began the year with a lot of tears when she came to the gym. It was hard for her to try things that were new to her. It was on the last day of class for the school year that she ran a lap (passing me) and yelled, "I am a muscle builder." From tears, to confidence - what joy for a teacher!

Tell about a moment in your career that you will never forget, possibly at an event or with a student or co-worker.
At the conclusion of the last class of my career the students and classroom teacher circled around me and prayed a blessing over me - what a memory to hold on to from teaching at Grand Rapids Christian Schools!

What are you looking forward to, or what is your next adventure?
Spending time with family (especially grandchildren, volunteering, playing pickleball, traveling...)

Any other advice, memories, or stories you would like to share?
I have so many great memories but two funny notes from students stick out in my mind both written by students acting as parents: one student signed the note from "Joey's mom" while another student asked to be excused from running in the "gum".
