GRCHS Senior Abby Bratt Gets Her Night to Shine

GRCHS Senior, Abby Bratt, Gets Her Night to Shine!

Abby Bratt, a senior student, supported by the inclusive education program at Grand Rapids Christian High School, has always dreamed of attending a formal high school dance or banquet. Last spring, due to COVID, our formal dances had to be canceled, and as the year has gone on, it became apparent that this might not happen this year either.

Along with Abby's friends and family, the high school team didn't want her to graduate without attending a formal school dance.

Missy Meekhof, the Inclusion Coordinator at the high school, happened to be listening to a podcast at the end of January where Tim Tebow was talking about Night to Shine, an event he hosts each year. This worldwide event is a prom for individuals with special needs and is hosted by local churches. The evening celebrates individuals with a variety of challenges and reminds them that they are amazing gifts from God. This year's event was virtual.

Mrs. Meekhof, Abby's mom, and a few of her friends decided they would plan a fun evening in the spirit of the "Night to Shine" events, just for Abby! Mrs. Meekhof worked with Elizabeth Hoving, GRCHS Dean of Students, and the GRCHS facilities team to set up the high school's town square, including decorations, pizza, and cake. All of this contributed to a fun formal for Abby and her friends. The girls enjoyed photos, socializing, and of course, dancing! They even live-streamed the event so other friends and family could join in (virtually) on the fun.

The evening truly celebrated Abby and the girl's friendships and allowed them all to enjoy this fun and memorable evening together.
