CAMPUS: Rockford Christian School

How long have you been working at GRCS?

This is my second year.

Give a brief overview of your family life, educational, and/or career history.

The rhythms, joys, and challenges of a teacher’s life shaped the landscape of my childhood, given both of my parents were educators. Best of all, my family’s school-oriented schedule meant we could spend summers on a small inland lake in Michigan. For countless hours outside, I played, tinkered, day-dreamed, and got as dirty as possible. Like many children, I loved exploring the world around me. I asked question after question. I was fascinated by nature and in awe of its diversity. These foundational experiences lead me to a career in teaching science. I’ve taught in a variety of settings: international and domestic, charter and private, lower grades and middle; yet, my deepest gladness has come in contexts where I can bring all of myself to school, where I’ve been able to connect creation to the Creator. I have now found a home here at Rockford Christian and delight in the daily opportunity to foster a school-wide culture of learning and growth through knowing, loving, and serving God.

What is your favorite part of your job?

There is something special about serving a building that has both 3 year-olds and 13 year-olds. I love seeing the way students, teachers, and families create lasting relationships because of their time at Rockford Christian. However, if I had to pick a favorite part of my job, it would have to be greeting students each morning during drop off. Seeing students jump out of their cars and run into school sets a wonderful tone for my day!

What led you to the desire to become a school principal?

Having been a teacher for most of my career, I know the incredible impact effective school leaders can have in supporting teachers, students, and families and realizing the mission and vision of a school. I felt called to this role at Rockford Christian and excited about the opportunity to build on the wonderful outdoor education program.

Of all your time at GRCS, what special projects or accomplishments are you most proud of?

Over this past summer, with the support of our incredible PTO, we were able to replace an existing section of blacktop with a nature-based playscape. The current health crisis has brought so many plans to a halt — I am very grateful that we were able to move this project forward. The playscape has already been well-used!

What is something you learned about yourself or about teaching and learning during the pandemic and/or Off-Campus Learning?

Last spring's move to Off-Campus Learning highlighted for me how God has wired us for community and relationship. I'm extremely proud of the way our teachers used technology to keep meaningful learning going. Still, I missed witnessing all those small moments before class or during recess when teachers would connect with their colleagues and students. Our physically-distanced Car Parade and 8th-grade Graduation were much-needed opportunities to see one another again and celebrate God's faithfulness to our community.

Share your thoughts on this year's school theme: "All Things. Hold Together."

I have found myself coming back to our theme often this year. Each week seems to bring new scenarios, opportunities, and challenges — what a comfort it is to know that Christ goes before it all! From masks and wildfires to protests and debates, our theme from Colossians reminds us that it is Christ who holds all things together.

Which Portrait of a Graduate characteristic do you relate to most within your role, and why? Or, which characteristic do you try and exemplify most, and why?

The Portrait of a Graduate paints an inspiring picture for our students and staff alike. It is hard to highlight just one characteristic listed — each attribute reinforces and builds upon the others. With that said, I do think it is especially important, given my role and identities, that I continue to exemplify cultural competence. We see God's vibrant love expressed in a multitude of ways across all peoples and cultures; often, our differences are used to divide or oppress us. It is my prayer that our ability to work effectively across differences enables the Holy Spirit to use us to more fully realize God's Kingdom here on earth.

Anything other additional thoughts, stories, or advice you'd like to share?

Wonderful things are happening at Rockford Christian — it's a joy to be a part of such a caring, tight-knit community.
