Staff Celebration Friday Larry Borst

IT'S STAFF CELEBRATION FRIDAY!

Today we shine the spotlight on GRCHS Bible & Theology Teacher, Larry Borst.
Thank you for all that you do, Mr. Borst!

NAME: Larry Borst
CAMPUS: Grand Rapids Christian High School
ROLE: Bible & Theology Teacher

How long have you been working at GRCS?
26 years

Give a brief overview of your family life, educational and/or career history.
I am married to Gretchen (Dykstra) who is a teacher in Jension and is from Dearborn MI.  I have three children...youngest just started college!  I attended Grand Rapids Christian High School, Calvin College, Calvin Seminary, GVSU, and WM....I like taking classes.

What is your favorite part of your job?
Students and Colleagues and sometimes even Administrators.  Conversations with Students.

Of all your time at GRCS, what special projects are you most proud of?
The first thing that comes to mind is thinking about the role and seeking to encourage the formative role of Christian Practices in education and the Christian life.  That is a serious one....but other things that bring joy would include a Star Trek and Christian Philosophy class during Winterim, interactions with students while being a special assistant to the head coach of the bowling team, making cookies for colleagues, and going out for coffee occasionally to discuss theology with students.

Are there any extracurricular activities you lead or assist with?
I have coached soccer, helped the bowling team, and been involved with chapel.

Anything silly or interesting you would like to share?
When I interviewed for the job at the High School I sat in the same chair as I had sat in when I got in trouble for a senior prank.  The principal did not remember me from my prank days.  I did not mention it to him at the time.

Which Portrait of a Graduate characteristic do you relate to most within your role, and why? Or, which characteristic do you try and exemplify most and why?
Lifelong explorers.  We are never done.  T. S. Eliot said "We shall not cease from our exploration, and at the end of our exploring will be to arrive at the place where we started and know that place for the first time."  There are always new beginnings and new endings in learning.  There is always more to learn and new ways to grow.  Properly seen, this should also strike the heart with both joy and a good dose of humility.
