Keeping You Connected

Details from the Dean

We have had an awesome start to our school year. Our students have adjusted to changes and new routines, and they come with a positive attitude each day. We want to celebrate our awesome students and their desire to build a positive school community, so we have started fun Wednesday celebrations each week during lunch. We started with ice cream for all students, and this past week we enjoyed fun yard games outside during lunch. It was a time for friendly competition and community building. We will continue to announce our fun Wednesday plans in the morning announcements each week. We hope to celebrate our students and continue to create a welcoming community here at school!

Plugged In

We're off to a great start this school year. I would like to highlight our senior retreat that took place last weekend. Our seniors were amazing and it was a great time to come together and worship, build relationships with others, connect and have fun. This experience will help set the tone for the school year led by our senior leadership. We're always looking for ways to connect, celebrate and come together as a community.

All our students will have another great opportunity to get connected at our Clubs and Orgs Festival on September 14th.  We have a variety of opportunities to help students get plugged in here at GRCHS. We're really looking forward to this event highlighting all our Clubs and Orgs!

Stronger Together

This past week, I was invited to sit in on Eagle Links’ first meeting of the school year. Eagle Links is an awesome opportunity for general population students and students supported by inclusion services to connect outside of the classroom. Under the guidance of Mrs. Pecor and Mrs. Dekker, Eagle Links students meet for lunch, talk about life, and play board games. Annelle Dykema, a junior, enjoys it because “everyone is welcoming. It’s a safe environment for us to get to know students who we might not get to know otherwise.” In addition to meeting for lunch, the group has completed projects to help local nonprofits like Ele’s Place or Kids Food Basket. Even though meetings have begun, Eagle Links is always looking for more members to join.

Rooted in Christ

Each Tuesday the enter high school community gathers in the DeVos Center for Arts and Worship (CAW) for our weekly chapel. The first couple of weeks we have been exploring this year’s school theme: “Come, follow me.” This past week’s chapel in particular looked at how Jesus calls people from all walks of life and backgrounds to follow him: Peter the religious know-it-all and Thomas the religious skeptic; Matthew the tax collector and Simon the Zealot. We noticed that followers of Jesus do not always share the same backgrounds or views on life, but, borrowing a line from C.S. Lewis, we are called to “look in the same direction” as we all seek to follow Jesus. You can watch the chapel here.
