A Note on the January 6 Events in our Nation's Capitol

January 7, 2021

Dear Grand Rapids Christian Schools Families,

The events we witnessed in our nation’s Capitol yesterday were sad and disturbing. As a nation and globally, we watched criminal acts and threats to our Constitution unfold before our eyes. As educators, we know that our students were affected, each being impacted in different ways and likely confused and concerned about what they saw. We took the opportunity today to give students a safe place to talk about it in ways that are appropriate for their age and developmental level.

When history presents itself, as it has in many ways over the past 12 months, we have the unique opportunity as Christians and as a Christian school to teach our children how to view what is happening through a lens of our shared Christian faith. Through prayer and reading God’s word together, we can comfort and reassure them and ourselves that God is in control. He has told us not to be afraid. We confidently rest in His peace because in Him all things hold together.

If you have questions about how to talk to your child or have concerns that they could use additional support in processing these recent events, please reach out to your child’s teacher or building principal. We have resources and staff available to help.

In Christ,

Tom DeJonge
