Homecoming 2020

Next week is homecoming week at Grand Rapids Christian. Traditionally, “HoCo week” is filled with lunch assemblies, crazy student sections at sporting events, a dance, and class reunions. We definitely will miss those traditional celebratory events, but we are thankful that we can still have some fun activities that make memories for our amazing students. We look forward to celebrating our school and to building community next week. Go Eagles!

When searching for a Biblical description of homecoming, I was drawn to John 14 where Jesus comforts his disciples by talking about going home. He says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Two verses later, Jesus tells his disciples, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” 

The word “home” brings out different emotions in each one of us. For some, we feel comfort, peace, and belonging. For others, there is unrest, division, and even fear. Later on in chapter 14 (verse 27) Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” We are reminded that Jesus is not only the way to our home for eternity, but also to peace in our earthly home. The peace that we all long for when we think of home is promised to us through a life in Christ and through the Holy Spirit. 

High school is not an easy time for many, especially when we are physically distanced and it’s more difficult to meet new classmates and to build strong relationships. Our hope is that in the absence of our “normal” events, we can reflect on how we make GRCHS feel more like home to all of our students. 

Please join us in praising God for a school community that desires that each student feels at home. Please also pray that even during this time of physical distancing, we would feel the presence of the Holy Spirit that unites us and brings us peace.
