A Weary World Rejoices

Vocabulary.com defines advent as “arrival that has been awaited (especially of something momentous).” If I’m being honest, I’ve found myself longing for the advent of a return to normalcy and end of this virus. That is certainly not wrong. In fact, I’m sure most reading this would agree. Our prayers have centered around pleas for God to provide for those who are sick, struggling financially, or suffering from loneliness and anxiety due to COVID-19.

In (virtual) church this past Sunday, my pastor talked about the beginning of the Christian Advent season by highlighting a line from the song “Oh Holy Night” that says “a weary world rejoices.” I have heard that line a thousand times, but never stopped to reflect on it. “Weary” might be the perfect word to describe how most of us feel right now. It was a great reminder that despite our weariness, entering the Christian Advent season is a time of hope, peace, and joy that can only come from the birth of our Lord and Savior. His birth made everything new and a weary world rejoiced with a thrill of hope.

I pray that your family experiences this hope, peace, and joy and that despite weariness, you may rejoice in the birth of Jesus!
