Middle School Principal's Corner — January 14, 2020

Invitation to a Conversation.

Next week Monday, January 20, we will celebrate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at GRCMS.  We will remember his life and Kingdom-building work in our country and the impact that he has had on our nation’s history.

As part of our remembrances of Dr. King on this day--and as a way to continue forward the work of racial reconciliation, justice, and bridge-building that he modeled — I would like to invite our GRCMS parents in for a conversation with Mr. Ashanti Bryant, former principal of GRCMS and fellow GRCS parent, and me.

In chapel on Monday morning, we are going to use a video created by Julian Newman, pastor of Tribes Church in west Michigan and creator of CultureCreative, who is working with GRCS to help facilitate the cultural competence work at GRCS.  We will watch this video about the 7 Components of "Trans-Cultural Bridge-Building."

On Monday in our coffee conversation, Ashanti and I want to talk with our GRCMS parents about this important bridge-building work and to share with you some of the plans we have for opportunities for our students to engage in these conversations in the second semester.

If you would like to join the conversation on Monday, please RSVP here so we can plan for the appropriate space to meet.  We will begin at about 8:10 am just after the start of the school day, and we hope to finish around 9:00 am.

Dr. King once said that “if I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”  He did great things for the Kingdom, and we are called to follow his lead.

As our school theme has emphasized, we want to do both the small things and the big things that will help us to all learn from one another and grow together as the body of Christ at GRCMS; each small thing that we do will help us to be God’s agents of renewal and reconciliation in the various communities of which we are a part.

We hope to see you on Monday morning!
