Rockford Principal Corner - December 6, 2022

This past Thanksgiving, my 4-year-old son said something that got my attention. We were preparing the turkey and removing the parts that come stored in the bird, and he asked what was inside the little package of organs.

“The heart,” we answered.

“Is that where Jesus lives?” he replied.

I love how literal his understanding is. Jesus doesn’t just abstractly reside in our hearts but physically makes his home in us!

I’m sure each of you could share a similar story from your own children. In fact, the whiteboard in the teacher’s lounge was recently filled with dozen of quotes that staff here had heard throughout the year. The way our students see the world can make us laugh out loud or stop us in our tracks. They engage the world with curiosity, innocence, energy, and joy.

We have a lot we could learn from our kids. At school, we are tasked with teaching but the learning that happens is reciprocal. Our theme this year, “Come. Follow, me.” is an invitation to all of us, and Jesus was pretty clear with his disciples that following after him involved following the lead of children. He himself came as a baby!

My son asked us this past week if Mary and Joseph are on their way to Bethlehem. We tried to explain that Christmas is the time we remember the incredible events that happened more than 2,000 years ago, yet I think there is something I could take away from his perspective. I pray that this holiday season the wonder and mystery of Christ’s birth be made real in your life.

Blessings,

Ben
