MIDDLE SCHOOL FINE ARTS OPPORTUNITIES
Music
Band
The band program focuses on reading, understanding, performing and valuing music through a performance experience. Key areas of focus include rhythm, melody, harmony, musical form, tone color, expression, approach to vocal music and awareness of various forms and styles.
Orchestra
The strings program emphasizes reading, understanding, performing and valuing music through an orchestra experience. Key areas of focus include rhythm, melody, harmony, musical form, tone color, expression, approach to vocal music and awareness of various forms and styles.
Choir
The choral music program integrates reading, understanding, performance skills, and aesthetic appreciation of choral music. Key areas of focus include rhythm, melody, harmony, musical form, tone color, expression, approach to vocal music and awareness of various forms and styles.
*Instrumental classes are held three days a week. Students may choose to participate in one instrumental group. Choosing to be a member of band or orchestra should be carefully considered, as it involves a commitment to both the director and the group. Students choosing to join band or orchestra must commit to a full school year of rehearsals and performances, barring extenuating circumstances.
Visual Arts
Visual Arts Curriculum
The visual arts curriculum is designed to achieve the six goals for design and media, including perception, conceptualization, visual organization, creative expression, applications skills, and aesthetic appreciation for the visual arts. Students study and apply design elements, various media processes, as well as gain knowledge of art styles and themes in this yearlong course.
Art Club
The art club focuses on enhancing art skills through creativity. It meets once a week after school during the in the fall and spring.
Yearbook
Seventh and eighth-grade students are responsible for coordinating the assembly of the school yearbook “Legacy." Team members participate in taking photos and experimenting with page layout and design. Meetings are held after school throughout the year.
Theater & Performance
Drama Club
The Drama Club teaches acting and theater principles through skit practice. It meets two evenings a week in October and November, culminating in a final performance. Drama club is open to fifth and sixth grade students.
Honors Choir
The GRCMS Honors Choir is an auditioned group of students meet Wednesdays after school from March to May for eight weeks of rehearsal. The group sings a variety of vocal styles, including classical, contemporary Christian, world music, and pop. Auditions are held in February, and are open to all students, grades fifth through eighth.
Middle School Play/Musical
Seventh and eighth grade students audition, practice and perform in a full musical or play every year. Two final shows are produced and presented on the high school stage with full costumes, lights and make-up. Auditions take place in December, and rehearsals run two or three evenings a week from January through March. The final shows are on a Friday evening and Saturday afternoon in late March.
