Robotics Program
Grand Rapids Christian offers several VEX Robotics opportunities for students interested in robotics and problem-solving through team participation. VEX is student-focused, meaning students are responsible for the work, not coaches. It fosters skills such as creativity, teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and problem-solving, which are essential to being effective servants of Christ in contemporary society.
5th-6th Grades
VEX IQ Challenge (IQ) is a beginner-level robotics program for students in grades 5-6. Students work in small groups to design, build, and program a robot to perform tasks to earn points on a game field. VEX IQ uses snap-in-place pieces for rapid prototyping and testing. Although IQ is student-centered, it requires significant supervision and family involvement. Get more information about VEX IQ here.
7th-12th Grades
VEX V5 Robotics Competition (V5RC) is a competitive robotics program for students in grades 7-12. Students collaborate in small groups to design, build, and program a robot to perform tasks to earn points on a game field against other teams.
Students in grades 7-8 will practice about twice a week in the evenings from September through December. Some students may be invited to continue until early March. The high school level is more demanding, and students may practice up to six times a week, both in the afternoons and evenings. The high school season typically continues until late February, with the possibility of competing at the World Competition in late April. Get more information about VEX V5RC here.
Registration costs vary based on the age level and program. Registration includes a team t-shirt, all robot parts and supplies, and participation in all team events during the main season. To keep individual registration fees low, we have team sponsors, apply for grants, and participate in fundraisers. Additionally, we offer scholarships for families who need assistance.
