Learning to Wait

Hurry up and wait.

It clearly describes any number of things in our lives. Personally, it can mean trying to rush my kids out the door, and then the inevitable waiting for putting on socks, boots, and then wanting a snack when all I wanted to do was jump in the car and go to Grandma and Grandpa's ASAP. To quote my mom (and possibly yours, too): "Such is life."

We need to learn to wait and to realize what God develops and promotes in us through such processes. I certainly need to learn to wait. I often think of the seasons of Advent and Lent as seasons of waiting. Of reminding me that — in my spiritual life, as well as my family and professional life — waiting is not just a part of life but a very important part of life.

Waiting doesn't only teach us patience-though patience is one of life's important virtues-but it also teaches us to reflect on the goodness (or, in some cases, the "badness") of the thing or things for which we wait, to enjoy the moments leading up to the event, and to be thankful for time.

As we begin the season of Lent this week, may we wait and reflect on the Lord for the blessings of forgiveness and eternal life that we can celebrate at Good Friday and Easter.
