Dear Friends of Rockford Christian:
I thought I would take this opportunity to stand for a moment on a soapbox and talk about literacy. In schools (and homes) there is an increasing influence on technology to assist in learning and in entertainment. I for one enjoy technology, and other than my poor typing skills, am technology literate.
When I googled "technology and literacy" I came up with 2,200,000 results. Some are for the use of technology to grow in literacy, some are against technology and some mixed. I personally am of a mind that technology can support literacy but as we start our Scholastic Book fair this week I am drawn again to how I learned to read with printed materials made from paper.
Not advocating eliminating technology but encouraging all of us to pick up a book and read as a model for our children or an activity we do together.
On Thanksgiving, I was gifted by having my first born grandchild read a passage from Psalms with me. It felt good to hold the book with her. I was greatly blessed to hear her read.
